Stop-Motion
Animation

An introductory course on hands-on stop-motion techniques, fabrication, lighting, and software through a collaborative short-film project.

About The Class

This is an in-depth, yet introductory level, elective class in the art of stop motion animation. Students will explore a variety of hands-on techniques for creating motion picture art using the stop action photographic process: including animating clay, objects, and puppets.

Some basic fabrication, lighting, and photographic skills will also be covered, as well as the fundamentals of using stop motion software. In-class exercises and production assignments are designed to build toward the creation of a short, stop motion animated, team project final film.

Stop-mo Capsule is a digital collection archive documenting selected student stop-motion works from Pratt Institute’s School of Art and Animation. The archive extends the second biennial Stop-Motion Show, held at the Pratt Brooklyn Campus Library and Archives in 2026, by preserving access to films, puppets, props, sketches, process materials, and 3D scans after the physical exhibition.

Do not reproduce, distribute, exhibit, or commercially use images, videos, 3D scans, metadata, or process materials without permission from the appropriate creator, rights holder, or custodian.
